It uses colored  band to identify the RESISTANCE value of RESISTOR and its percentage of tolerance.

For Example:

We have a resistor of color band of  YELLOW, VIOLET, ORANGE, GOLD. The resistance and tolerance of,

Yellow-4

Violet-7

Orange-3

Gold-+/- 5%

Therefore the value of resistance & Tolerance is 47*1000 with a tolerance of  +/-5%.
